An interesting historic find!
Hidden away underground this WWII bunker was unearthed by the owners during Spring 2024.
After many collisions with the lawn mower with what appeared to be a large concrete stone, Deb and Ian decided to don their wellies and start digging!
It was an intriguing and challenging few days ahead to remove all the soil and rubbish that had been thrown into the bunker entrance, including a fridge, lawn mower, pots and pans, crockery and more! The hard work was rewarded with the revealing of this hidden historic gem!
During WWII the British Army built more than 600 of these underground bunkers, largely to serve as bases for small groups of fighters who had been mobilized in the event of a German invasion.
Our bunker may of been used to house a variety of armaments and defensive systems. Emplacements for machine guns, anti-aircraft guns and artillery. Bunkers were more commonly associated with military use.
This particular bunker has concrete steps down to a small square opening. The internal dimensions are 182 cm x 187 cm x 182 cm high, the construction is of concrete, possibly reinforced with steel bars.
Unfortunately it is a challenge to keep the bunker dry during periods of heavy rainfall, but guests are welcome to take a peep!!
